What’s different about a Hilltop Hypnotherapy HypnoBirthing course?

When I discovered HypnoBirthing 10 years ago, it was still relatively unheard of in the UK and choice was fairly limited – there were a couple of books available and maybe one course a couple of hundred miles away. Fast forward ten years and there seems to be new HypnoBirthing courses popping up everywhere – the choice is immense and no doubt all that information is baffling when you’re already trying to work your way through the mass of information people throw at you when you’re expecting a bundle of joy. So, I thought I’d make it a little easier and spell out a little what taking a course with me entails and what’s so different about it.

What is the Mongan Method of HypnoBirthing?

The Mongan HypnoBirthing course was established 30 years ago by Marie Mongan – the pioneer of HypnoBirthing, it’s been tried and tested, is accredited by the Royal College of Midwives and practised all over the world. There have been others pop up since, many of whom were originally trained by the HypnoBirthing Institute set up by Marie but after

This is a complete antenatal course covering not only general HypnoBirthing skills that other courses may teach but it goes deep – you’ll get lots of practice, plenty of opportunity to ask questions and access to an experienced Clinical Hypnotherapist to ensure you’re fully prepped and ready to go by the end of the course. No wobbles!

If you’re pregnant and would like to find out more about HypnoBirthing before signing up to take a complete course then this taster session is for you!

During this 1.5 hour session you will:

  • Discover what Hypnobirthing is and how it works – whatever kind of birth you’re planning and whatever course it takes
  • Gain an overview of how the mind and body work together
  • Learn how your birth partner can support you
  • Be taught a great calming breath technique
  • Experience one of the many HypnoBirthing visualisations we use on the course
  • Have any questions answered and myths dispelled

There’ll be refreshments provided and some great free samples available on the evening.

The cost of this session is £20 and must be booked in advance.

Couples who sign up for the complete HypnoBirthing course after attending this session will have £20 deducted from their course fee.

Kobi’s Birth Story

This birth story is a true testament to the strength and determination of a wonderful couple and that when we confront our fears and work through them, the rewards can be immense!

Sam and Tom began the HypnoBirthing course in Saltash at 22 weeks pregnant and travelled up from West Cornwall over a period of 5 weeks (with a break in the middle while we waited for the snow to clear!) They both showed complete dedication, determination and along with completing all homework, practising regularly and coming armed with lots of questions, their dedication to the cause was inspiring. Sam tells it in her own words below but to watch her go from tearful and apprehensive to confident and determined was just incredible. I can’t leave out the role of Tom – he soaked in everything to be able to support Sam and did an incredible job both in the lead up and on the day.

I’m a first time mum at 38 and always wanted children but never thought it would happen.

I was led to HypnoBirthing with Hilltop Hypnotherapy and HypnoBirthing as I’m a very anxious person and I couldn’t even think of giving birth without crying or having a panic attack. I have a huge phobia for assisted births.

The course was fantastic. Laura was really patient and calming and helped me a lot with releasing my fears. Another aspect of the course is that I loved how it included my partner. It gave him the tools to be able to assist me positively and not to feel helpless during my labour.

Labour began at 41 + 4 weeks after leaving the midwife and booking in for a discussion about inductions. I’m so glad I went into labour naturally as I was getting quite stressed that I’d have to have an induction on delivery ward. I was in labour for 50 hours and had a natural waterbirth in a midwife led birthing unit.

Hypnobirthing allowed me to get through the 50 hours of labour and to cope with the pain sensations long enough to have a natural birth with no pain relief. My partner was wonderful and kept me focused counting my surge breathing for me on every surge over the 50 hours. He was my rock when I began to falter around transition time. Kobi arrived weighing 8lb3oz. 

I loved that I was able to give birth naturally – I have fibromyalgia which gives me a lot of hypersensitivity with pain/temperatures and so never thought in a million years I’d be able to cope without pain relief. One thing that birth has taught me is that I’m stronger and more resilient than I believed.

I’d totally 100% recommend Laura and the course to others – it was the only thing that made me feel strong and confident about giving birth.

HypnoBirthing Course Dates Released for September 2019 – Saltash and Tavistock

This is the original and still the best HypnoBirthing course. Taught by a Clinical Hypnotherapist, accredited by the Royal College of Midwives and covering all you need for a calm, gentle birth.

Sessions are 2 hours long, 5 in total. They are spread over 5 weeks in order to ensure maximum benefit, support and time to prepare (this format has been tried and tested over 30 years) however if time is short please let me know and we can arrange something to fit in with your schedule.

Included in the fee is your book, MP3s, a folder of handouts, goody bag and refreshments as well as support from me both before and after the birth.

This course covers all you need for a calm, gentle birth and includes everything your birth partner could need to support you. You’ll leave fully prepped and confident for whatever way you choose to birth.

Anxiety and Breath – How to Manage Your Symptoms

Experiencing shortness of breath or other breathing difficulties can be a scary but common symptom of anxiety. Anxiety is your body’s natural response to fear-also known as the fight or flight response and is your body’s way of preparing to fight or run from the situation causing distress.

Other symptoms that can occur during this response and as a result of anxiety include:

  • faster breathing (hyperventilation)
  • chest tightness
  • breathlessness or a feeling of suffocation
  • feeling like you have a lump in your throat
  • muscle tension
  • heart palpitations
  • feeling faint, dizzy, or unsteady
  • nausea or stomach discomfort
  • restlessness, irritability, or feeling on edge

You can experience chest tightening, shortness of breath, and faster breathing because your body is trying to get more oxygen to your muscles and preparing you to run. Your heart rate increases and you may feel hot as more blood pumps to your muscles, preparing you to fight.

All of these symptoms are normal body responses designed to save your life. However, if you’re not preparing to fight a tiger or run from an angry bear, it can be counter productive and lead to feelings of distress.

When experiencing shortness of breath during an anxiety attack, it can seem counterproductive to focus on your breath but by focusing on your breathing and getting it under control you can get the right amount of oxygen to your lungs and begin to break the anxiety cycle.

Abdominal (diaphragmatic) breathing is the most efficient and relaxed way of getting enough air into your lungs.

Here’s how to practise diaphragmatic breathing:

  1. Sit up comfortably in a chair or lie back on a flat surface, like your bed, with your head supported.
  2. Place one hand on your upper chest and the other below your rib cage. This will allow you to better feel your diaphragm as you breathe.
  3. Breathe in slowly through you nose so your stomach moves out against your hand.
  4. Tighten your stomach muscles. Let them fall inward as you exhale through your nose or your mouth (depending on what’s easier for you).
  5. Continue to take deep breaths in and out, feeling your stomach rise in and out. Do this for 5 to 10 minutes a day.

In HypnoBirthing we use the Calm Breathing technique-practise your abdominal breathing and as you breathe in count to 4…and breathe out to the count of 8.

If you notice shortness of breath before experiencing a full-blown panic attack, learn to recognise it. Don’t ignore it and focus on your breath before the symptoms escalate.

5 Tips for Successful Weight Loss

  1. Stay positive! You can do this you just need to fully believe you can. Affirmations are a great way to remind yourself through the day-I encourage clients to choose theirs and place them in prominent positions around their home where they can see them regularly and let them enter their subconscious with ease.

  2. Stop buying! If it isn’t in your cupboards you can’t eat it. Simple but true.

  3. Make a plan! How are you going to achieve your goals? What will your meals be like? What could you replace unhealthy snacks with? Could you increase the amount of exercise you do? What will be your reward for staying within your plan? Each little tweak you make will help towards your overall achievement.

  4. Tell your friends! The more you bring it into the open the more motivating it is to stick to your plan. The encouragement from others can also help.

  5. Don’t be hard on yourself – if you take 5 steps forward and one step back, you’re still in a better place than when you started.

How Hypnotherapy Can Make a Huge Difference to Your Weight Loss Plan


I want to lose weight but something just isn’t clicking”


If I had £1 for every client who told me that they’ve tried lots of diets but not been able to stick to any of them I’d be a rich woman. So what’s the problem? Why can’t we just stop eating what’s so obviously bad for us and just start exercising? The answer often lies in our subconscious.

Just look at the front cover of almost every woman’s magazine on the news stands and you’ll see headlines such as ‘Lose Weight! Follow This 10 Point Plan to Success’ or ‘The Diet That Will Make YOU Lose 1 stone in a Week’! Or how about the slimming clubs that advertise such great successes but are full of those of us who turn up, weigh, admit defeat yet again and go home to eat a donut? (Just me then?) It’s not that these diets don’t work and slimming groups are incredible places with a minefield of information and great support. BUT. If your mind isn’t in it, your body isn’t following.

So how do we engage our minds?

Good question! We’re all unique with different motivations, ways of translating the world and levels of willpower. What we do have in common however is that our subconscious minds hold the key to a lot of these and by finding the key, we can make that connection and unlock whatever it is holding us back. Easier said than done you may say. Not necessarily. A skilled hypnotherapist can access that part of you that is holding you back and help to switch on to your preferred, more healthier choices. I’ve had clients who’ve been trying to lose weight for 20-30 years only to realise that what was holding them back wasn’t the inability to stop themselves reaching for a biscuit or two but the deeply held belief that they didn’t deserve to be slim. Other clients may be eating extremely healthily but leading a sedentary life whilst others may be the opposite-exercising regularly and rewarding their efforts with a big sandwich and packet of crisps…and then a bottle of wine. It’s by getting to the root of this that we can unlock the willpower and convince the unconscious to get on board with what we truly want.

Of course it would be great to be able to eat and do what we want but if our mission is to lose weight and become healthier this is always going to be a losing battle. Hypnotherapy can not only tap into motivations and get you eating and exercising healthily again but it can also change the way you see yourself, increase confidence and help you to see how worth it you really are.

It’s this that will lead to weight loss success-a changed mindset sets you up for long term changes so that you can follow your healthy choices with ease and enjoy it. If you REALLY want to do it you can and hypnotherapy is a great tool to enable you to achieve your goals.

It’s my passion to take what I’ve learnt from the last twenty years to transform the therapy experience so that YOU can take back control. What sets me apart is I practise what I preach and don’t provide a one size fits all approach-we are all different and you deserve a fully specialised and personalised service to become the best you can be.

So, why do I do this?

I have a degree in business and am the proud mum of two young children. Having spent my working life so far within both small and corporate companies, coupled with my own life experience, I have become increasingly aware of the stresses and challenges facing women today.  I decided to study Hypnotherapy having experienced firsthand how life changing it can be and how the skills learnt can be applied to a wide variety of situations. For example, techniques learnt for a relaxed childbirth can also be implemented at the Dentist. The skill is completely transferable which was something that inspired me to develop and become a hypnotherapist to enable me to pass this ability on to others. Self hypnosis is a skill that anyone can learn and once taught it can be applied independently whenever and wherever the client wishes.

I now hold a diploma in Hypnotherapy and love helping to empower women in leading an anxiety free life whilst tackling stressful situations with ease.  I specialise in anxiety, phobias, childbirth, pain management and weight loss but Hypnotherapy can help in a wide range of areas, for example confidence, public speaking, sports performance and one of my clients solved a life long issue of being unable to get to work on time!

I’m professional and passionate about what I do and like to make the therapy an uplifting process with great backup support. My approach is intuitive but not assuming. I am based at Saltash Physiotherapy Clinic, The Treatment Barn in St Mellion and Tavistock Therapy Centre as well as seeing clients via Skype.
